There are several real ghosts that seem to haunt the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida. Locals refer to this immense structure as the "Old Fort". Castillo de San Marcos was the first line of defense for St. Augustine, America's oldest city, when the Spanish were fighting the Redcoats. Many soldiers died here through battle or execution and their spirits live on. It is said that at the Execution Wall near the water that you can oftentimes see spirit energy at the top of the wall near the gun towers. Red Coats and Spanish turncoats were executed here. Oftentimes friends or family of the prisoners would be in the execution squad. That is why a lot of the bullet holes in the wall are higher than the people would have been because they would fire high so they knew they would not be responsible for their friend's execution.
Some of the most unusual occurrences include the "Battle Echoes" heard by visitors. By placing an ear to the wall, it is said you can hear the echoes of cannon fire and yelling. There is also telling of a young solder that can be seen leaning on the outside wall facing the bay after sundown.
Two spirits by the name of Mari Marti and Manual Abela are said to haunt the dungeon in which they were chained to the wall by Mari's husband, Colonel Marti, where they eventually died. Mari and Manual became lovers while Mari was still married to the Colonel. Once her husband caught her and Manual together, he had them ordered to the dungeon and chained to the wall. For a long time, screams could be heard coming from the couple as they called for help. Eventually, the screams stopped. Today, many have claimed that they can still hear the screams coming from the dungeon. Individuals that go inside can smell perfume that is sweet in nature. It is believed that the couple still lingers here after death.
