Captain Tony’s Saloon is the oldest bar in Florida and the site of the original Sloppy Joes Bar. It is the bar Ernest Hemingway patronized from 1933 until 1937, and is still seen today having a ghostly drink or two. Before it was a saloon, the building was an ice house and the first morgue on the island.

There is also a hanging tree in the center of the room that rises through the roof. This tree served as the gallows for over 75 murderers and pirates. 16 skeleton remains were found in the saloon when they were laying the foundation. Two tombstones remain in tact near the tree and in the pool room. They say a woman’s ghost who was executed for the brutal murder of her husband and child still roams through the bar in a bloody blue dress.
