An old legend states that the bridal chamber spring is the final resting place of two lonely lovers. Claire Douglas was the rich boy in love with Bernice Mayo, the poor girl who would meet him secretly near the springs. One night, Claire gave Bernice a bracelet and asked her to marry him. Bernice was never happier but Claire's father was furious. He had Claire shipped away to Europe where he kept Claire isolated from her letters.

As the years passed, Bernice died of depression and loneliness. She asked that her body be lowered into the spring where she last saw Claire and exchanged their love. Soon after Bernice's death, Claire returned. After trying in vain to find Bernice, he rowed out to the springs where they used to meet. While gazing into the water below him, he saw the necklace on Bernice's lifeless body, wedged into the rocks. Claire dove into the water and tried to free Bernice's body. He died in her arms. Today, many people say they can peer into the springs and see the two lonely lovers locked in a final embrace.
